The Average Farmer is in the COVID-19 High Risk Category: Our Role in Protecting their Health

Protecting Farmers COVID 19

At Landus Cooperative, of our 7,000 farmer-members, 63% are 60+ years of age. According to the USDA, the average age for an American farmer is just slightly below that at 57.5 years old. Why is this significant? Because this age and above with underlying health conditions are considered the highest risk for COVID-19 according to the CDC.

With the average farmer being at a high risk, now more than ever our Landus Cooperative team is finding innovative ways to keep you, our farmer-members, customers, and employees, safe.

Industries deemed “essential” by the Department of Homeland Security, like agriculture, must keep moving and producing. Spring operations are kicking off and our locations are working hard to provide you with valuable services while also taking precautionary measures. At many locations this means no face-to-face contact when picking up or dropping off everything from checks to grain. In Odebolt, a ticket printer has been installed outside to reduce the amount of contact at the scale.

Social distancing does not have to mean relationship distancing. At our Greene location, hand sanitizer was made and generously donated by an employee’s child. Many locations like Jefferson are calling producers each day to check in and see how they can assist from a distance.

Communication is as important as ever. Consider signing up for location-based text messages about COVID-19, should it impact your location (use your subscription tools in the Landus Cooperative app or portal) and check the COVID-19 section on our website for new information.

Additional ways you can be productive this spring while also protecting our farmers and the agriculture supply chain include using our app to avoid trips into the office and utilizing our automated product pick-up loading.

Continuing to provide quality service safely during this critical spring season is at the forefront of our team’s mind.

Thank you for working to help “flatten the curve” as we each do our part in social distancing in this uncertain time. Please reach out to the location near you for specific guidelines. Thank you for your business and be assured that your Landus Cooperative team is ready to serve you this Spring season!
