Consolidation is happening on the crop input supply side of agriculture. There have been various rumors of mergers among the large seed and ag chemical companies, along with a wave of alliances at the co-op level.
Eric Sfiligoj, editor of CropLife magazine, says the consolidation of co-ops is a trend that’s been going on for decades.
In 1990, there were 2,835 co-ops in the United States. In 2015, there were 997 co-ops. In Iowa, there were 710 co-ops in 1951, and 49 in 2015.
